Giant pouched rats are currently being trained by the non-profit company APOPO to find victims of disasters like earthquakes. However, when a rat has found a victim there is still no way to know what the position of the victim is. Utilizing previous work on a backpack for the rat, Bram van Kasteren has worked on a method of solving this. Localizing small animals in unknown areas gives ways to a vast amount of fascinating engineering challenges.

Bram is electrical engineer with an interest in using technology for humanitarian purposes.
